A Word from the Principal

Welcome to 2026! As we begin a new year together, January is a wonderful time to reflect on perseverance and growth. Our January quote of the month is, “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” — Confucius. This is the message I am sharing with students as we encourage them to keep trying, even when learning feels challenging. I invite you to reflect as a family: What is something that was hard for you to learn, but you kept trying anyway? New habits, new goals, and continued effort can lead to great growth over time.
Please note that there will be no school on Monday, January 19, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
We are also very excited to welcome our families to STEM Night on Wednesday, January 22! Join us for a fun and engaging evening featuring star gazing, math games, robotics, and LEGO building. Pizza will be available for families who would like to enjoy dinner together while learning and exploring. It promises to be an awesome night of curiosity, creativity, and connection, and we hope to see you there!
Finally, please be sure to check the information below regarding upcoming road work beginning January 5. This construction will impact traffic to and from school, and we want to help everyone plan accordingly.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. We are looking forward to a great start to 2026 together!
Warmly,
Sandy Herfkens

Holiday Drive Video

Thank you to our amazing Canyon View families for your generosity during our Holiday Drive. CODAC was incredibly appreciative this year, especially as they experienced a significant decline in donations from other agencies. Thanks to your kindness, Canyon View alone was able to meet all of their needs. Your compassion truly made a difference for families in our community, and we are so proud of the giving hearts of our Coyotes. 💛🐾

Teacher of the Year!!!!

The Catalina Foothills School District Foundation (CFSD) Teacher of the Year (TOY) program is our annual, district-wide celebration of teaching excellence! We're not just recognizing good work—we're shining a spotlight on the true superstars of our schools.

From a group of five incredible finalists, the CFSD Teacher of the Year Committee will select two exceptionally skilled and dedicated educators who are truly changing lives. These are the teachers who have earned the deep respect and admiration of students, parents, and colleagues. They are the leaders who passionately inspire learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities, playing an active, vital role in our communities.

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT! You or your child have the power to help us find these champions. Nominate a deserving teacher from Canyon View or any other district school today by completing the TOY 2026 Application!

🚧 Road Construction Alert Beginning January 5

Starting Monday, January 5, road construction will begin on Sunrise Drive at the Esperero Wash and is expected to continue through late summer.
What families should know:
  • Construction hours: 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
  • 🚗 Traffic impacts: A 25 mph, two-lane detour will be in place, and traffic patterns may shift as work progresses
  • 👷 Flaggers will be present to help guide traffic safely through the area
  • ⏱️ Please allow extra travel time during arrival and dismissal
  • ⚠️ Construction schedules may change due to weather or equipment issues
We encourage all families to approach the area with caution, follow posted signs, and plan ahead to help ensure a safe and smooth commute to and from school. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as this important work is completed.

Open Enrollment & Registration

We’re excited to share a new, simplified process for our Open Enrollment families!
Starting November 1st, families who are already open-enrolled at Canyon View will no longer need to reapply each year. Instead, you’ll simply complete registration for your child beginning
November 1.
Only families who have a new incoming student who has not previously attended CFSD and lives outside the district will need to complete a new Open Enrollment application.
We hope this change makes the process easier and more convenient for everyone!

📊 AASA Testing Schedule for Grades 3–5

We are sharing our AASA testing schedule for students in grades 3–5 and ask that families please review it carefully and plan accordingly.
Whenever possible, we kindly request that doctor appointments, vacations, and other absences be scheduled outside of your child’s assigned testing days. Once a class begins a testing session, students are not permitted to enter the classroom late, as this can disrupt the testing environment. Students may absolutely still come to school if they arrive late; however, they will need to remain in the office or another supervised setting until their class has completed the testing session. At that point, they will rejoin their class or test during a scheduled make-up time.
Our goal is to have 100% of eligible students participate in testing. Full participation helps ensure we receive all of the points available toward our school letter grade and gives us the most accurate picture of student learning and growth.
If your child becomes ill on a testing day, please keep them home. We completely understand that kids get sick, and we have intentionally planned make-up testing days to support students who are absent due to illness or other unexpected circumstances.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support in helping our students do their very best. Your planning and communication truly make a difference.

We are also looking for business sponsors or a contact who might be willing to donate Silent Auction items at the Family Dance in February.  Please reach out to the FFO!  All support is much appreciated!  [email protected].

Our next FFO Community Meeting is on January 15 at 2:00 p.m. in the CARE building. All are welcome—we’d love to see you there!
